Daniel Barnett is a managing attorney in commercial civil litigation & business law for Grewal Law PLLC. His practice areas include commercial litigation, general civil litigation, family law, criminal law, and personal injury.
Daniel is an experienced advocate for his clients. He has worked on multiple high-profile cases, including the Flint Water Crisis and those involving former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, Larry Nassar. Daniel appears in courts all over Michigan, including the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. He has also appeared in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Daniel regularly advises business clients in matters regarding litigation, negotiation, dissolution, and general operations. His work has played a significant role in the enforcement of employment covenant (non-compete) clauses for employers, releasing employees from employment covenants with former employers, and the resolution of breach of contract actions. Daniel also has experience in complex business litigation, including shareholder actions, diversion of business, breach of commercial contracts, partnership buyouts and dissolution, and corporate dissolution.
Daniel recognizes that each client has his or her own unique circumstances, and that each of those circumstances requires an open mind, a listening ear, and a personal approach. He has a natural instinct to help people, and he brings his previous experience and compassion as a teacher to the legal field.
Daniel graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Music Education in 2006. From 2006 – 2013, Daniel served as the band director for Newaygo Public Schools. Under his leadership, the Newaygo Marching Band won the Flight IV Michigan Competing Band Association State Championship in 2010 and 2012. Daniel was awarded teacher of the year for Newaygo County in 2011. After seven years as a teacher, Daniel left the profession to pursue a career in law.
Daniel attended the Michigan State University College of Law from 2013 – 2016. While at MSU, Daniel earned a position on the MSU College of Law Moot Court Board, where he competed in national moot court competitions, earning the American College of Trial Lawyers Medal for Excellence in Advocacy. He also earned jurisprudence awards in Advanced Negotiation and while a student-clinician at the Alvin L. Storrs Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic. Daniel graduated from MSU Law Magna Cum Laude in 2016.
In his spare time, Daniel enjoys spending time with his wife, Emily, two sons, Kalvin and Isaac, daughter, Elisabeth, and dog, Swarley. He also enjoys playing basketball, attending sporting events, traveling, and spending time outdoors. He is a big sports fan, and openly admits to being a die-hard Lions fan.
